Heimo Zobernig

The Vienna-based artist Heimo Zobernig has attained a central position in the world of contemporary art with his cross-genre conceptual practice. His oeuvre, which encompasses painting, sculpture, video and performance as well as architecture, prints and furniture design, is characterised by a simple geometrical artistic vocabulary and an unpretentious material aesthetic. Subtly and enigmatically, his works questions styles, themes and discourses of 20th-century art. He addresses forms of abstraction and the potentials of painting and sculpture as well questions concerning presentation and exhibition context as well as the relationship between functionality and autonomy. The show focuses on Zobernig’s creative practice and includes exhibition posters, artists’ books and catalogues from 1980 to the present day that convey his occupation with typographical designs principles in addition to language and literature. Heimo Zobernig (born 1958 in Mauthen, Austria), a professor for sculpture at the  Akademie der bildenden Künste in Vienna since 2000, is one of Austria’s most renown contemporary artists, representing his country, for example, with an exhibition in the Austrian Pavilion at the 2015 Venice Biennale.
