Laura Schawelka – Double Issues

What does photographic surface mean? And photographic illustration? Laura Schawelka explores the extent to which these two areas overlap in her works encompassing photography, video and installation art. Images have now overcome the boundaries of their surfaces. Pixels can be shaped in (and on) any real or virtual form. Pictures are either over-life-sized or miniaturised in Schawelka’s works, serve as backgrounds or are fitted with props; liquidised, replaced or washed away. The objectivity of photography is not only exposed as a fiction through the disintegration of depicted object and object of depiction in addition to the neutrality of the exhibition space. 

Laura Schawelka (born 1988 in Munich) studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, completing her studies there in 2013 as a master student under Prof. Tobias Rehberger. In 2015, she received a Master of Fine Arts at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles. She moved to Paris in 2017 with a studio grant from the Hessische Kulturstiftung.
